Congressional Breakfast on Capitol Hill: Dr.
Carlton Erickson gave an excellent presentation on Chemical Dependence as a
Chronic Medical Brain Disease. Carol McDaid presented an update on
the Parity Bill for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment and was then
presented the NCADD President's Award. Rep. Patrick Kennedy provided a powerful
speech on Parity- HR-1424 and the need for sustained advocacy efforts by NCADD
and our Affiliates to educate members of congress. Congressman Kennedy and
Congressman Jim Ramstad received NCADD Special Awards for their work in
fighting for Parity. Attendees then sat in on the mark-up of HR-1424 before the
House Energy and Commerce Committee.
NCADD President Robert J. Lindsey provided opening remarks
and welcome.
Vivian Faden, Ph.D., Deputy Director, Division of Epidemiology
and Prevention Research at NIAAA- National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism, presented Findings from and Framework for the Surgeon General's Call to
Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking.
Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Acting Director,
Dennis Romero presented Prevention:
Present and Future which provided a thorough review of CSAP goals and
activities.
Pamela Imm, Ph.D., one of the authors of a Rand report
presented, Preventing Underage Drinking: Using the SAMHSA Strategic
Prevention Framework and Getting To Outcomes to Achieve Results

ReThinking Drinking: A
Restorative Justice and Underage Drinking Programwas presented by
Monica Wilke-Brown from NCADD Affiliate, Employee Family Resources, in Des
Moines, IA.
"Awareness Theatre: Uniting Peers and Drama for Prevention" led
by John Blackman and students from NCADD Affiliate, Chautauqua Alcoholism &
Substance Abuse Council in Jamestown, NY presented an interactive dramatization
of how the Awareness Theater program is used in their community.
Christopher Kennedy Lawford, author of Symptoms of Withdrawal
spoke at the NCADD Awards Dinner. His speech was entertaining, humorous,
informative and inspiring! Through the generous support of Caron, attendees
received a complimentary copy of his book and he held a book signing.
Other Highlights:
NCADD Orientation for new executive directors, first-time
attendees: NCADD President, Robert J. Lindsey: "NCADD: Symbol of
Help and Hope" NCADD History.
Bill W and Dr. Bob: Playwright Stephen Bergman, MD and Hazelden
presented the premiere of the new DVD and he was presented NCADD Performing
Arts Award.
Special Guests: We had several special guests stop by and
provide important updates:
- Sis Wenger: National Association for Children of Alcoholics
(NACoA)
- Rob Morrison: National Association of State Alcohol & Drug
Abuse Directors (NASADAD)
- Kim Crump: Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI),
