NCADD-NACoA Joint Statement re: ONDCP National Drug Control Strategy

Kid & momOur input for the 2013 National Drug Control Strategy is a combined recommendation from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) and the National Association for Children Of Alcoholics (NACoA).

According to ONDCP's website format for Strategy input, these comments likely apply to Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of the Strategy, and would apply to all instances involving parental abuse of drugs and alcohol (not to any specific substance). It would also be particularly relevant to the following special populations identified in the Strategy: Juveniles; Women and Families; Tribal Communities; and Military, Veterans, and Their Families.

37 Percent of Substance Abuse Treatment Admissions Involve Both Drugs and Alcohol

DoctorA report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) finds 37.2 percent of treatment admissions for substance abuse involve both drugs and alcohol.

The report shows 730,228 substance abuse treatment admissions in 2009, or 37.2 percent, were for people who reported abuse of alcohol and at least one other drug; 23.1 percent of all people admitted reported abusing alcohol and one other drug, and 14.1 percent said they abused alcohol and two other drugs.

Newswise reports that when people combine alcohol with other drugs, they tend to drink more heavily than if they use alcohol alone.

Rapid Rise Seen in Antipsychotic Prescriptions for Children and Teens with ADHD

ADHD-brainAntipsychotic treatment has increased rapidly among young people in the United States, with much of the increase coming from prescriptions for disruptive behavior disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Reuters reports.

In the Archives of General Psychiatry, the researchers report that antipsychotic drugs are prescribed during almost one in three visits children and teenagers make to psychiatrists in the United States, an increase from one in 11 in the 1990s.

Most of the antipsychotics are not prescribed for conditions approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In children and teenagers, antipsychotics are indicated for irritability associated with autistic disorder, tics and vocal utterances of Tourette syndrome and bipolar mania, and schizophrenia.

Almost 30 Percent of Teen Boys Use Some Form of Tobacco, CDC Study Finds

teen-smokerAlmost 30 percent of boys and 18 percent of girls in middle and high school used some type of tobacco last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced recently.

The rate of teen tobacco use has been slowly declining over the past decade. The CDC report found 23.2 percent of high school students and 7.1 percent of middle school students used some form of tobacco, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The CDC findings come from a national survey of almost 19,000 students.
