Alcohol Ads Violating Industry Rules More Likely in Magazines Popular With Teens

PDF | Print | E-mail

MagazinesAlcohol ads that violate industry guidelines are more likely to appear in magazines popular with teen readers, a new study finds.

Ads violate industry guidelines if they appear to target a primarily underage audience, highlight the high alcohol content of a product, or portray drinking in conjunction with activities that require a high degree of alertness or coordination, such as swimming. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health studied 1,261 ads for alcopops, beer, spirits or wine that appeared more than 2,500 times in 11 magazines that are popular among teens.

The ads were rated according to a number of factors, such as whether they portrayed over-consumption of alcohol, addiction content, sex-related content, or injury content.

Age 21 Alcohol Law Is “Balanced and Effective” Researchers Conclude

PDF | Print | E-mail

College kids 3"The National Uniform Drinking Act Age 21 has been a balanced, effective, and popular tool in helping to combat the many problems associated with underage drinking—for students or nonstudents alike" is the conclusion of a Commentary in the July 2012 issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

The piece supports findings of a study by Fitzpatrick and colleagues reported in the same journal, examining whether lowering the current drinking age would be an effective means of reducing underage drinking problems, as claimed by the Amethyst Initiative, a collaboration of 135 college and university presidents who have challenged the current laws. "Research shows," the commentary stated, "when the drinking age is 21, those younger than 21 drink less and continue to drink less through their early 20s."

African Am. childrenTobacco sales to minors reached an all-time low last year, under a government inspection program aimed at reducing underage tobacco use.

Exclusive Interview with Robert J. Lindsey on TestCountry

PDF | Print | E-mail

LindseyNCADD President and CEO Robert Lindsey revealed in an exclusive interview with TestCountry that the EAP began through working with unions in order to combat alcoholism.

Initially, it was called the Occupational Alcoholism Program, focusing primarily with problems related to alcohol addiction, until it later started to incorporate drug awareness. Over the years, the concept has saved not only thousands of lives, but also rescued companies and corporations from spending millions of dollars.

NCADD has firmly hold its ground in the belief that there is no more effective tool for an employer than helping all their employees and their company's bottom line live a drug-free life.
