NCADD Campaign to Prevent Kids from Drinking
WHAT IS NCADD DOING TO PREVENT KIDS FROM DRINKING?
Prevention has long been an integral part of NCADD's mission. At the national level NCADD has developed public service advertising campaigns and publications for both children and parents. At the local level, NCADD Affiliates conduct a wide variety of community-based prevention programs for youth. NCADD also sponsors Alcohol Awareness Month in April, which usually focuses on underage drinking, and distributes suggestions for grassroots activities that can be conducted throughout the year.
Right now NCADD is working hard to implement a legislative strategy,
first presented in our landmark Statement on the Prevention of Alcohol-Related Problems and Alcoholism, that could have an enormous impact on children's attitudes about alcohol. The strategy seeks to raise federal excise taxes on alcoholic beverages to fund a counter advertising campaign that would balance the pro-drinking messages children are exposed to every day through radio and television with more objective information about alcohol use.
The alcoholic beverage industry, which has a powerful lobby in Washington, strongly opposes this strategy. Former First Lady Betty Ford and Senator George McGovern already have joined our campaign but now we need your help. Please do what you can to persuade the President and members of Congress that beer should cost more than soft drinks and that kids might find alcoholic beverages less appealing if paid advertising on radio and television were used to help educate them about its dangers.
